Joan Schwartz, American (1946-)
Joan Schwartz was born and currently still resides in Michigan. As a child, Joan’s passion for creating started as a child. Nurtured by nature, she began her career as a pediatric nurse. Even while working and raising three children, Joan always made art an important part of her life. For the past decade, she has focused on mixed media mosaics, seeking out training from top mosaic artists from around the world. Joan’s skillfully crafted work communicates her value for life, children and well-being. Through her art, she is a committed supporter of Make-A-Wish Foundation, StarsGuitars through William Beaumont Hospital and Doctors Without Borders, all of which are dedicated to helping children with life-threatening illnesses. Currently, Joan continues to expand her art while also promoting mosaics in the Metro Detroit area and other U.S. cities by coordinating mosaic exhibitions and bringing in well-known instructors from the U.S. and abroad.
Artist Statement: “Art has been a major component of my life for as long as I can remember. Just over 10 years ago I began my journey in mosaics. I incorporate handmade pieces and varying types of glass, ceramic, beads, wood, metal, and any other matter that calls me.
Each wall sculpture and 3-D piece consists of attention to details in the design elements, color choices and selection of materials. These works may include added touches from my many years of collecting random items and supports my desire to expand my own unique style.
I try to grow as an artist by taking as many workshops as possible, whether at a local venue, or traveling to many wonderful cities in the US or throughout the world. The craving to search for more found objects and to exchange ideas with fellow artists, only adds fuel to my never-ending desire to learn, improve and create.”
